Who is What?
What? is a Hudson Valley, New York-based funk fusion sextet known for delivering high-energy performances that blend funk, jazz fusion, improvisation, rock, R&B, hip-hop, and pop into an unforgettable live experience. Formed in 2016 by SUNY New Paltz music students Ryan Perrone and Dan Steen, the band solidified its current lineup after graduation and has since built a devoted following throughout the Northeast. Featuring Ryan Perrone, Dan Steen, Jared Nelson, Jeremiah Joseph Mahoney VI, Alex Endres, and Owen Moore, What? draws inspiration from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Vulfpeck, Phish, and Snarky Puppy while creating a sound uniquely their own. Renowned for spontaneous, ever-changing setlists and a powerhouse horn section, the band has performed more than 300 shows since 2021, including notable appearances before crowds of 5,000, sold-out hometown runs, and collaborations with members of Goose, Vulfpeck, The Wailers, Karl Denson, and others. Following the release of their debut album Lavender Lounge in 2022, What? continues to expand its catalog of original music and is currently preparing its second studio album while touring extensively throughout the East Coast.
