With the imminent release of their debut album, “Unturned Stone,” vocalist Joanna Teters (Sundub, Carrtoons, Childish Japes) and guitarist Jose Lopez (Sundub, Chosen Style) add a bracingly original collection of soul, rock and Americana to the contemporary songbook. Powered by Teters’ wide-ranging and soulful voice and Lopez’s meticulous rock stylings, the songs were recorded, produced and mixed in partnership with Sean Walsh of the National Reserve and are punctuated by horns and pedal-steel guitar.
Written largely in the living room of their Brooklyn, NY apartment during the years of their courtship and marriage throughout the 2020 pandemic, Teters and Lopez—known together as The JoJos—weave poetic lyrics of grief and loss, love and relationship, social justice and action. Their approach is rooted in a variety of contemporary styles and as arranged, recorded and mixed by Walsh, also evokes the nostalgia of the Stax Records era. Each of the 10 songs on the new “Unturned Stone” album is a testament to both the pressing and timeless matters of the day, as well as to its creators’ heartfelt attention to the art and craft of music making.
